Making the decision to build a home is an exciting time in your life. Whether you’re looking for your first home or you’re ready for your next – it’s a big step. Daydreaming about styling your home and picturing yourself relaxing on the patio is all part of the experience, but there are lots of things to think about before diving in.

Visiting show homes will give you a good idea of what you like and what you don’t like when planning for your new home. It will also help you decide which home building company you want to partner with on this journey.

To help you get the most out of your visits, here are our top tips to help you prepare for your show home visit.

Create your wishlist

Before you visit, make a checklist of what matters most to you and what specific requirements you’ll need in your new home. How many bedrooms and bathrooms do you need? Do you want extra features like a walk-in wardrobe, an ensuite or a large kitchen pantry? Are you big entertainers, gardeners or sports fans? Starting with your interests is key to planning your new home.

If you already have a section, it’s a good idea to think about its location and orientation, as this will affect the layout and design of your home.

Ask questions

Now is the time to ask any questions you might have about building a new home. Make a note of any questions you have already and the information you’ll need to make your building decision, so we can be sure to cover these off with you.

Some of the things on your list might include: How long do your builds take? What are the costs and what’s included or not included? Which suppliers do you work with? How will my investment be protected, what building guarantees and warranties do you offer?

Take notes and photos during your visit

Think about how you want your spaces to look and the overall feeling you want to create within your new home.

Take lots of photos during your show home visit that you can look back on later – capturing layout, cladding or specific design elements that you like. Make notes on anything you think you might want to include in the design of your home, particularly any key features of the showhome.
